Crumps Mountain Cottage
The cottage is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is ideal for anyone seeking time to rest and relax with the distraction of people, phones, traffic noise, and computers. We have 243 wooded acres that borders approximately one mile along the George Washington National Forest. While there is no phone at the cottage, cell phone reception can be obtained from the cottage’s deck.
The cabin is ideal for bird enthusiasts, hikers, mountain bikers, and all-around nature lovers. The view from the deck is one of a pastoral valley below and surrounding mountains during the day. At night, the sky sparkles with stars and when the moon is out it bathes the valley in a soft glow. One house is visible with the naked eye from the deck but only at one spot and the structure is a mile and a half away. Your host house cannot be seen from the cottage but is approximately 300 yards away through the woods, or one mile via road.
It is not unusual to have deer walk through the cottage’s yard. Sometimes you can see many deer and flocks of turkey either in the host’s apple orchard or nearby farm fields. In the spring, one is often awakened to the gobbling of a turkey from its nearby roost or the drumming from a male grouse. There are trails, only some of which are marked, and logging roads on our 243 acres of land for you to explore and allows you to enjoy different mountain vistas with ease. Two mountain streams are either located on or within 10 yards of the property. In May, whole mountainsides are covered either in purple rhododendron blooms or white blooms of mountain laurel.
A small fish pond is located in front of the host and hostess house. It is stocked with bluegill, bass, and catfish. Fishing is allowed and a fishing license is not needed for a private pond. There are several benches around the pond as well as one on the boardwalk.
Below the pond is a fenced wildflower garden. There are three nearby fishing lakes, located 8 to 10 miles from the cottage, but only one (Mill Creek Lake) allows swimming.
The cottage has all the conveniences of home and is equipped with central heat and air conditioning. We furnish basic toiletries such as bed sheets, extra blankets, extra pillows, towels, bath mats, bath and hand soaps, toilet paper, hair dryer, dish soap, dish towels, napkins, paper towels, trash bags. In the basement is a washer and a dryer. There is a TV equipped with both VCR and DVD players, but no TV reception. However, we have a large movie library on VHS and DVD, that is stored at your host’s house. A radio that plays cassettes and CDs is also available, as well as board games, puzzles and playing cards.
You can cook major meals while staying the in cottage. Cooking pots, eating utensils and dishware are supplied along with a large refrigerator, cook stove with oven, Weber charcoal grill, microwave, coffee pots, and toaster.
We furnish the coffee, tea, sugar and most of the basic spices. Only once, do we supply a dozen eggs, pound of bacon, quart of milk, stick of margarine, and choice of homemade bread and 8 oz. jar of jam/jelly/butter. The deck has a small table, two folding chairs, and two lounge chairs.
No smoking is allowed inside the cottage!
The nearest major grocery store (Food Lion) is 18 (Amherst) or 20 miles Lovingston away from the cottage, so it is best to either stop along the way to the cottage or bring your food with you. However, there is a small store (Riverview) 6 miles away that has groceries, serves homemade food for daily specials and you can order a pizza.
Pets are allowed but owners must pick up pet’s feces from the cottage’s lawn area. Pets are not allowed on the cottage’s beds or furniture. If your pet is accustomed to lying on furniture then owner must cover the furniture with sheets that we provide for that purpose. Your pet may roam freely on the 243 acres of private land, but be aware that upon sighting deer your pet may give chase, separating you from your pet.
We are centrally located, one hour drive away, to many historical places such as Appomattox Historic Park, where Lee surrendered to Grant; Monticello and Ash Lawn, homes of President Jefferson and Monroe; Michie Tavern; Poplar Forest, Jefferson’s summer home; WWII Monument; Natural Bridge and Lexington, home of VMI cadets.
