Sugar Tree Inn

High in the Blue Ridge Mountains, less than a mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway, is a haven of natural beauty called The Sugar Tree. Set on twenty-eight wooded acres at 2800 feet, Virginia’s Mountain Inn is a place of peace, solitude and tranquility.

Named as one of the “Six Romantic Inns” by the “Washingtonian” and called “Mountain Magic” by “Hampton Roads”, The Sugar Tree is truly unique. Nestled on the western slope of the Blue Ridge Mts. less than 3/4 mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway, the inn is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Yet, with Lexington and Staunton only 30 minutes away, cultural events, shopping, and great antiquing are nearby.

Activities galore. With two trails on the 28 acre property, the novice hiker does not have to stray far to experience nature. Spring bursts forth with the color of Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, Trillium, and other mountain flowers. Summer finds the mountain air cooler and dryer than the valley below.

Although the rooms have air conditioners, they are rarely used. The fall colors are hard to describe. As for wildlife, guests have seen turkey, pheasant, deer, and numerous other species of birds and animals on the short loops about the inn.

Trails with names like Yankee Horse Trail, Indian Rocks, White Oak Flats, and Jump Mountain Trail are nearby. For the avid day hiker, trails abound in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Appalachian Trail can be accessed at several points less than 30 minutes from the inn. The highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River, Crabtree Falls, is only 15 minutes away.

Books and maps abound in the living room and library of the lodge. For those less inclined to walk, we will assist you in finding a perfect road tour of Rockbridge or adjoining counties. Sights along the way include Rockbridge Vineyards, Buffalo Springs Herb Farm, Wade’s Mill, and walking suspension bridges in Goshen Pass. For those wanting live theater, the Lime Kiln and Black Friar Theatre are approximately 30 minutes away.

Accommodations are both spacious and cozy. Each guest room is individually themed and decorated. Built of 175+ year old logs taken from cabins, a store and a church in the Shenandoah Valley, the main lodge and one of the guest buildings offer the rustic feel of another time.

All guest rooms have wood-burning fireplaces and private baths.
